Sadly, yesterday morning, as we were all preparing for our Easter brunch, one of the residents of our fair town succumbed to a fire which started on the second floor of her house around 8 AM. I was in the kitchen putting the Spanish Moss in the serving tray for the eggs when I first heard the sirens as the fire department rushed down the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. I few moments later they drove by Crest Avenue on their way to the fire.

So tragic. I did not know her personally, but on the days I walk to and from the subway, I walked right by her house. She was an avid gardener. In the summer she would have beautiful tomato and pepper plants. I could see her screened-in back porch on my walks and it did show signs of hoarding. But who am I to judge. Just an awful thing to have happen on any day, but especially on Easter. I believe there was a report stating there were no smoke alarms in the house. Such a small and inexpensive device might have helped her to survive. Let's all check the batteries in our smoke detectors today. Rest in Peace dear neighbor.
