Hydrangea Mania

I love hydrangea.  They are so majestic and beautiful.  I am very fortunate to have a beautiful specimen in bleu in the front yard at Crest Avenue.

This is actually two separate plants which have more or less merged into one.  This year is the most spectacular of all years.  In another week or two it will be a sight in pale bleu flowers.

A closer view of this extraordinary hydrangea.

On Saturday morning, I awoke to find two beautiful pink hydrangea on my front porch.

Aren't these magnificent?  I think the Hydrangea Bunny must have stopped by on Friday night!!!

These were promptly planted around the existing bleu hydrangea.  The type of soil you have indicates the color of the flowers each year.  While these are pink now, when they come back next spring, they will be bleu to match the existing hydrangea.  It has to do with the alkaline or acidity of the soil.  It is easier to change from pink to blue than it is from blue to pink.  Aluminum sulfate added to the soil will change the flower from pink to blue.  Of course, if the soil is already acidic (as is the case at Crest Avenue), the flowers will natually be bleu.  I cannot wait to have this entire section of yard filled with beautiful bleu hydrangea.
