A Little Good New from the Garden

It's not all bad news from the garden.  We are going to lift up our spirits a little bit and talk about something good that is happening in the garden.

The beautiful purple hydrangea!  Every year this hardy hydrangea comes back more vibrant than the year prior.  This year, we have lots of wonderful growth popping up from the crown.  I went around the outside and trimmed back the woody growth from previous years to a uniform length.  I also removed a few stems that were dead.  It's a good idea to do this every year after the second year of growth on hydrangeas. You can easily tell which of the stems are no longer healthy and able to produce flowers by their color.  Dead stems are lighter in color than healthy stems.  You can cut these lighter colored stems all the way back to the ground.  This particular hydrangea needed to be trimmed because some the stems had gotten way too long. Last summer it started to lose its shape because it had not been pruned properly.  But I don't think we will have that problem this year.  I can't wait for this to bloom.
