We are continuing our clean-up efforts at Crest Avenue from the severe winter weather. Today we will talk about the arborvitae at either end of the front of the house.
Last week I told you that I discovered late in the season last year that this arborvitae had a bagworm infestation. You don't ever want that.
This is what a bagworm moth infestation looks like. They build these little "pods" and adhere them to the tree branches. Actually, they adhere them to everything. I found them on the gutters, on bird feeders. Everywhere.
Eventually, this is what you are left with. Not pretty. If you see these pods on your evergreens, they must be dealt with immediately. Hand removal is best, if you can. If not, then insecticides are the next level of defense. As taken from www.domyownpestcontrol.com:
The most commonly observed form of this pest is in the "bag" stage. In this stage the bagworm is actually in the larval state of development. The bag is spindle shaped, made from silk and camouflaged with small bits of bark, foliage and other debris obtained from the host tree or plant. Full size bags may range in size from 1 ½ -2 ½ inches long. The actual worm or larva itself ranges in color from cream to brown and may be mottled with black spots.
Males, when they reach adulthood appear bee-like with furry bodies, and clear wings. The females remain in a larval state and do not emerge from the bag or develop wings.
The larva will stick its head and front legs out of the top of the bag to feed and move. When irritated, the larva will quickly pull its head into the bag and hold the opening closed. Mature larvae may stay on suitable host plants or drag their bags some distance before attaching the bag to change into the adult stage.
You can manually control bagworms by simply plucking them off of the infested trees and dropping them into a bucket of soapy water or squishing them. This control method is most useful during fall, winter and early spring, before the eggs inside the bag have hatched.
Chemical control may be achieved when the larvae are small and just emerging from the over-wintering bag. Use a concentrated liquid insecticide such as Orthene, Talstar or Tempo. Foliage should be thoroughly wetted with the insecticide spray in order to achieve thorough coverage. When doing an insecticide treatment, timing is key. To find out the correct time of year to treat for bagworms in your region contact you local Cooperative Extension office. These offices can prove to be invaluable when treating for insect pests.
Clearly, we did not catch this infestation in time. Like the article above states, it is sometimes difficult to know there is an infestation until it is too late because they blend in with the rest of the shrub. I won't say that it was the bagworms who were entirely responsible for the death of this tree. I believe they weaken it and the winter weather sealed its fate.
On the opposite corner, we had more damaged arborvitae. These were not visited by the dreaded bagworm. The trunks on these trees were literally snapped by repeated heavy snow and ice. There was no way to salvage them. They had to be completely removed. Dug out.
And here is what we were left with once we dug out the destroyed arborvitae.
Not pretty.
And here they are. We cut off the root ball and laid them to dry out in the sun. We will break them up later and use them to fill in areas in the yard. The tree trunks were cut and placed in brown paper bags designed specifically for yard waste. We put them at the curb and the yard waste people picked them up to be recycled as mulch.
We are heartsick over the loss of so many beautiful plantings this spring. But there was a tiny ray of sunshine. Actually, I think this is a grape hyacinth that probably ended up here by way of a squirrel. It was in a very shaded area with all of the arborvitae so it did not have an opportunity to bloom fully.
I have not decided on what to plant in place of the arborvitae. At first I thought I would just replace them with more of the same. But do I really want to do that? I am going to spend some time on this before I make my final decision. Maybe I would like to put in some Italian Cyprus trees. I don't know yet.

In most states there is only one generation per year. Bagworms can be tracked through the different seasons.- Spring- Egg hatch occurs from late May to early June, at which time the larvae crawl out in search of food. Each constructs a small bag around its hind parts with silk and plant material.
- Summer- Feeding, growth and molting continue until August, at which time the mature larvae attach themselves to twigs. They close the bag and reverse themselves so that they are head down in the bag. They remain there for about 4 weeks as pupae.
- Fall- During September and early October, the female releases a sex attractant pheromone and the males leave their cases and fly to the female bags to mate. Females lay 500-1000 eggs in each bag. There is one generation per year in Pennsylvania.
- Winter- The eggs over-winter inside the bag made by the previous year's female

Older larvae strip evergreens of their needles and consume whole leaves of susceptible deciduous species, leaving only the larger veins.
