Today we began preparing for the Christmas season at Crest Avenue. The first order of business was to get the Amaryllis planted.
I prefer the classic red amaryllis. They come in a variety of colors these days - red, pink, striated. They are all beautiful. I wouldn't mind adding a few more of some of the exotic varieties. But I decided to start with the classic red. It takes 6 - 10 weeks from the time you plant them for them to bloom. So if you are thinking of adding these beautiful plants to your holiday decorating theme, try and get them potted as soon as possible. A sunny area out of the way of drafts is ideal. After they are done, you can cut them back and set them outside in the spring and summer. They will stay dormant through the summer. You will need to fertilize every four weeks during this time and then bring them in during the fall and they will bloom again next year. They are very dramatic and add quite a flare to your holiday decorating.
