Get It Green

We have been talking about the blight on the boxwoods this spring.  It is my opinion that this browning came about as a result of ice-melt that I put down on the front sidewalk during one of the little snow squalls we had back in January.  This particular snow storm turned out to be a false alarm and we ended up getting more rain than snow.  The "storm", as it were, was so hyped all over the internet and on tv, that I thought it would be a good idea to properly prepare, so I put down ice-melt in the evening before I went to bed.  The next morning, and in fact the entire next day, we received rain which washed the ice-melt into the ground around the boxwoods.  Had we gotten snow, the ice-melt would have served it purpose to melt the snow and then would have been brushed off the sidewalk or shoveled away eventually and would not have harmed the boxwoods.  I have used the same brand of ice-melt for years when we have had snow and never had it turn the boxwoods brown.  Anyway, enough talk about why it happened.  Now we have to set about fixing it.  So here goes.

We are going to try something new that we have never tried before called "Get it Green."  I ordered this from QCI Direct (I have referenced them before).  I did a search online this morning and you can get this from Home Depot as well.  I did not know that.  So I will probably go to Home Depot if I need more of it.  The idea, as I understand it from reading their material, is to spray this on the yellowed areas of the boxwood.  It is green in color, which improves the look of the plant immediately.  But it also has reparative effects on the plant.  Read below:

24 oz. Get it Green Spray Liquid
"Get it Green instantly and safely revitalizes brown spots on lawns, shrubs and plants. Water based solution contains a specially formulated colorant that restores green to plants, nutrients to stimulate new growth, and enzymes to neutralize pet marks on grass. For indoor and outdoor plants, all types of lawn and garden material, and all weather conditions. Long-lasting. Child and pet friendly. 24 fl. oz bottle covers appprox 150 to 200 sq. ft. area."

So, as you have just read, it is not a paint.  It is a green spray but with nutrients that will hopefully help bring life back to the plant.  I think it is at least worth a try.

Here is a picture of a particularly bad patch.  So I gave it a few sprays.

And here is how it looked afterward.  Not bad.  It is certainly an improvement over how it looked.  Hopefully whatever is in this stuff is already at work helping to repair the damage.

Now we must move along down the row.  You see in this picture the beautiful green portion of the hedge directly behind this end section.  It was very odd how the ice-melt affected the hedge in certain areas but not others.  I hope we have stumbled on an amazing product in this "Get it Green."  I have to say the reviews on the Home Depot website were really good.  We'll check back on this over the spring and summer and see how things turn out.
