The new blog format on the Boxshoppe.org website did not work out quite like we expected. So we have decided to come back to the eBlogger work with a new blog called "At Home with John Newman." You can follow us at <a href="http://www.athomewithjohnnewman.blogspot.com/">www.athomewithjohnnewman.blogspot.com</a>. We will pick up there with all the same kind of projects as we had here. We look forward to you following us at our new address.<br />

<br />
As many of you know, Crest Avenue will soon be welcoming new owners. Our intent is to list it on or about June 1, 2015. I have already spoken to my friend Susan, who is a realtor (and my neighbor) and she has agreed to take the listing when we are ready. "Where will you go?" you ask. To the house on Dewey Street. Our circumstances have changed over the years, as they do for everyone. It is no longer practical to have two houses. The time has come to sell Crest Avenue and to focus our efforts on Dewey Street.<br />
<br />
Believe me, there are plenty of projects to keep us busy at Dewey Street, and I intend to continue blogging about those projects. You can still follow me on a daily basis, but on a different site. The new blog is called "Around the House, by John Newman." It will have its own page on my new website, BoxShoppe.org (<a href="http://www.boxshoppe.org/">www.boxshoppe.org</a>). Just click on the "BLOG" button on the top menu and it will take you directly to the new blog.<br />
<br />
It did not make sense to continue blogging under the "Welcome to Crest Avenue" banner when we no longer own Crest Avenue. I didn't want to just replace "Crest Avenue" in the title with "Dewey Street and call it "Welcome to Dewey Street." That seemed rather boring. So I went with "Around the House." I like that. And it is an accurate description of what the blog is all about. That is, covering all the things we do, "around the house", and hopefully giving you some new ideas for how to get those things done. We will still be in the garden and in the kitchen too. So it will be the same blog, basically, with a different name and at a different location.<br />
<br />
The next four months will be busy. We will need to first empty Crest Avenue and then set about getting small and some not-so-small projects finished before we list it. We will cover these projects here at Welcome to Crest Avenue. Once it is listed, we will move over to the "Around the House" blog full-time. Will there be posts everyday on Welcome to Crest Avenue as in the past. Likely not. But we will be posting often to let you know how things are going. We hope you will continue to follow us through this time of transition. We love having you as loyal readers and we look forward to starting a new venture with you in the coming months.</div>

It's not too late to get started on your resolutions for 2015. If you made them and time has gotten away from you, no problem. Start today. Or this weekend. One of the things I resolved to get done in the new year was to bring organization to my sock drawer. And I have been successful. Read on to see what I did.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivdWUIrXNqtE_15fOHIp3S1Z7_yUKfmFL5uIaC4RYIbji1iEQlbM_uH-qLKC1yDPIg87E6V8IcTZE6MpGiU7ziuZBC5B1CEsRshPAXlRPGp0BqgkxcC5Z6JlMGUAFB2utOtW0vMHIDerjR/s1600/IMG_0711.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivdWUIrXNqtE_15fOHIp3S1Z7_yUKfmFL5uIaC4RYIbji1iEQlbM_uH-qLKC1yDPIg87E6V8IcTZE6MpGiU7ziuZBC5B1CEsRshPAXlRPGp0BqgkxcC5Z6JlMGUAFB2utOtW0vMHIDerjR/s1600/IMG_0711.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My existing attempt at keeping my socks organized had somehow gotten off-track over the years. I was down to these two clear trays which were not nearly enough to house all of my socks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdep3s4OjmuO7cfDXkacFMnbTMIvDH3Rt3azmAeXZtVVDrMpJFG2nWxSoz1VdjQHD1PLUMZcwxqeaylRE3TpE5lXVCghe8aqO9r35C2ZDzlFN96cMh1jLkhdsxwPiZ-gJvwjlegjgKYKhw/s1600/IMG_0718.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdep3s4OjmuO7cfDXkacFMnbTMIvDH3Rt3azmAeXZtVVDrMpJFG2nWxSoz1VdjQHD1PLUMZcwxqeaylRE3TpE5lXVCghe8aqO9r35C2ZDzlFN96cMh1jLkhdsxwPiZ-gJvwjlegjgKYKhw/s1600/IMG_0718.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The overflow socks were folded and placed in another drawer of the dresser. This drove me to absolute distraction. Some socks in <i>this</i> drawer. Some socks in <i>that</i> drawer. Some organized in trays. Some not. Ugh!! So I was off to find some drawer organizers. They had to be shallow since the top drawer of the dresser is very shallow. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg67CmMz8Yp0-nOzhPgp6S47p36-3vS1tBYMRewS11z7xpSyww2HSsY5CzH3fq0OUTpZmv90DrQ8rtDwl5nQ5P4HQaVYTI8pA4NUmAbksrSQg2wtdq5mNAojSOtx4MJnbGN_IraJOFlbu5I/s1600/IMG_0716.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg67CmMz8Yp0-nOzhPgp6S47p36-3vS1tBYMRewS11z7xpSyww2HSsY5CzH3fq0OUTpZmv90DrQ8rtDwl5nQ5P4HQaVYTI8pA4NUmAbksrSQg2wtdq5mNAojSOtx4MJnbGN_IraJOFlbu5I/s1600/IMG_0716.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A few weeks ago, I was in the closet organization section at our local Walmart looking for large storage bins. I found large gray fabric bins which I loved and they worked perfectly for storage in the basement. When I went back to that department, I found these matching gray fabric drawer organizers from Better Homes and Gardens.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG3EuOiUp6cHA0uY9knMlbEvuWtJWkVsCpdBskoEGpLHWKlTovpulyW4O9BL3EExR4pOrjiJLHqxZSQ95r5990mokQJTyeZJFze9GCbVSGKgsZdFZd-cjMxEdVJc7GU_OEq7hTe2-qe6Xu/s1600/IMG_0717.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG3EuOiUp6cHA0uY9knMlbEvuWtJWkVsCpdBskoEGpLHWKlTovpulyW4O9BL3EExR4pOrjiJLHqxZSQ95r5990mokQJTyeZJFze9GCbVSGKgsZdFZd-cjMxEdVJc7GU_OEq7hTe2-qe6Xu/s1600/IMG_0717.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These three compartment fabric organizers were perfect for the job.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii8a-bmUuK7DmbG8jRGNQU1DF3gD3czJ_hRUszzOnYl60uqmNxm9Cjxt7N1CGjT2n36SZsfhP4bijLMkNbVzMCj2lUiyHE-nj7GVh5HIblrMEdyp8D6l-ovc_nDFq4xx75Q5XmtmAgNO6u/s1600/IMG_0719.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii8a-bmUuK7DmbG8jRGNQU1DF3gD3czJ_hRUszzOnYl60uqmNxm9Cjxt7N1CGjT2n36SZsfhP4bijLMkNbVzMCj2lUiyHE-nj7GVh5HIblrMEdyp8D6l-ovc_nDFq4xx75Q5XmtmAgNO6u/s1600/IMG_0719.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I bought two. There seemed to be enough space in both of these for my sock collection. The drawer could easily hold two of them, but not three. So I set about getting them in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9X6_UJyszmjXjPp67roAmBEaXvea-GU_I6rPSOABKJNWv63SrSuyT8avaFhvfNi0I5QhZALLeyBVLLGM-vp0o64ZaocaHQCEjKYBf3lhvxzB1hfYfo-N3K8me6cxOviHlb_ktgdWHz5Q7/s1600/IMG_0720.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9X6_UJyszmjXjPp67roAmBEaXvea-GU_I6rPSOABKJNWv63SrSuyT8avaFhvfNi0I5QhZALLeyBVLLGM-vp0o64ZaocaHQCEjKYBf3lhvxzB1hfYfo-N3K8me6cxOviHlb_ktgdWHz5Q7/s1600/IMG_0720.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next thing I knew, I had all my socks organized in one place. Casual, weekend socks on the right top two trays. Then, ankle socks to wear with sneakers and other casual shoes. In the top tray on the right are Ike Behar dress socks and sock garters. I only wear the sock garters if I am going to be at a special affair or a meeting where I will be sitting. There is nothing worse than having your socks down around your ankles, especially in a formal setting. Not a good look. In the middle tray on the right are heavy dark, navy woolen socks for the winter months to be worn with boots. One pair of brown socks. (I am not a fan of brown socks.) Next to the brown socks is a pair from Brooks Brothers with marlins embroidered. And the rest are everyday socks which could be worn in the office or casually. You can see that I am a fan of Ralph Lauren Polo and Lacoste socks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYOPWOfRfjAAqfts-67jxe4Djf3tEcosvpKPb5jzbyCncu7l6hXxwOYfv1lL9PeJWcizHu9YPIVaCYsaskkxZXIFgE36PFzqXHap8TJR9ugPWXpXUhKw__19Wlo4FdFzA_tgZDUKPrtxnB/s1600/IMG_0710.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYOPWOfRfjAAqfts-67jxe4Djf3tEcosvpKPb5jzbyCncu7l6hXxwOYfv1lL9PeJWcizHu9YPIVaCYsaskkxZXIFgE36PFzqXHap8TJR9ugPWXpXUhKw__19Wlo4FdFzA_tgZDUKPrtxnB/s1600/IMG_0710.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't stop with just the two gray fabric organizers for the socks. In the closet organization department they also had these four compartment drawer organizers. My mind went to the nightstands on either side of the bed. So I bought several of these organizers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB6iCDCGWsJZ2d8T25DwqSvuRo3abdf_celyF3pmDX9PLf65Ux-ZOJsB5etL5HgFex1zeOAmUuEmNKl6JLFsfakl3FWbgqYLEZowCDshTEKTVFl3JvpefOru7GVQJ3Wl5fAsbsgPXoF4if/s1600/IMG_0721.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB6iCDCGWsJZ2d8T25DwqSvuRo3abdf_celyF3pmDX9PLf65Ux-ZOJsB5etL5HgFex1zeOAmUuEmNKl6JLFsfakl3FWbgqYLEZowCDshTEKTVFl3JvpefOru7GVQJ3Wl5fAsbsgPXoF4if/s1600/IMG_0721.JPG" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
And look. It fit perfectly in the drawer of my nightstand. I could easily fit all of my essentials to include my DKNY nail kit, a remote, bottles of this and that and the Burt's Bees face cleansing cloths. Off topic for a minute, if you haven't tried the Burt's Bees face cleansing cloths, you don't know what you are missing. They are not heavily perfumed, so they work for guys or gals. Yes, guys faces get dirty too. The cucumber and grapefruit scents are very nice. And soothing. Wipe down your face and neck just before getting comfortable in bed. You will be asleep in no time. Pick some up today. I bought these at CVS, but I'm certain you could get them at other similar stores.<br />
<br />
So there you have it. My attempt at organizing the sock drawer and the nightstand drawers. I was successful and you can be too. And remember, we found these drawer organizers at Walmart. So you can organize and not spend an enormous amount of money. Saving money and getting organized. Does it get any better than that?</div>
At Home with John Newmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10091623049856686893noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5947927376656429472.post-38566998176561285532015-02-02T18:00:00.000-05:002015-02-02T18:00:46.695-05:00It Has Been a Busy Week!<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
When we last talked, on Monday of last week, we chatted about the Miracle-Gro seed pods. After that post, things got really busy with BoxShoppe and the remainder of the week was spent working with various entities about the future of that venture. We decided to go with a branding company called PrestoBox. I had several conversations with the COO of that company and we are very pleased with how things are progressing. Our logo has been designed and we are in the process of updating this blog and the website with the new logo. New product has been photographed and added to the website. We will soon transition "Welcome to Crest Avenue" to the blog page on the website. And we will soon be in talks with new photographers for the products we will be selling on BoxShoppe.org. So, ... our days have been busy.<br />
<br />
One of the things we are most proud of is our new logo for BoxShoppe.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5qrGBmj5veIx6UM_QJ2wMC0RzNXS_VbDP5WNF_FK0SuFbQs_M41ALDtz4G7_LWYZsX_e-8puZL689FzD9HUlIuLP58fKR8-OdYi1drx4uuLcLsByTKmyWsZ1YgffxTVTc97Hu3_OpC59d/s1600/PrestoBox+Logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5qrGBmj5veIx6UM_QJ2wMC0RzNXS_VbDP5WNF_FK0SuFbQs_M41ALDtz4G7_LWYZsX_e-8puZL689FzD9HUlIuLP58fKR8-OdYi1drx4uuLcLsByTKmyWsZ1YgffxTVTc97Hu3_OpC59d/s1600/PrestoBox+Logo.png" height="152" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I thought this was just perfect. Clean. Uncluttered. Minimal. It makes a clear statement without being fussy or "in your face."<br />
<br />
New business cards have been ordered.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnXoTD1D2Mw5SrKzDb846rdc0Y4O1RZ0GIck2TcKl_wK4WGf6CSReFMvXCd-WyGK7uhMqE6Md7emGtyGCVRgw_PHLVylYL0EPspq6jhM6u_KAO6oVlc2n_RMZdi2fe4mVxq2RXj0WA_lEq/s1600/Business+Card.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnXoTD1D2Mw5SrKzDb846rdc0Y4O1RZ0GIck2TcKl_wK4WGf6CSReFMvXCd-WyGK7uhMqE6Md7emGtyGCVRgw_PHLVylYL0EPspq6jhM6u_KAO6oVlc2n_RMZdi2fe4mVxq2RXj0WA_lEq/s1600/Business+Card.png" height="233" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So things are moving along nicely. This week we will have some interesting posts for you to read. We will have a post on organizing the sock drawer. We all like to get things organized in the new year and I found some great drawer organizers. We made homemade chocolate ice cream, so there will be a post about that. In our effort to minimize our consumption of factory processed foods, we made a delicious avocado-cilantro salad dressing which you will definitely want to make for yourself. And we made banana bread brownies with a beautiful glazed icing. All of these things are coming up on Welcome to Crest Avenue this week. So don't miss it!!!!<br />
<br />

As I was making my way through our local Wal-Mart over the weekend, I decided to wander back to the garden center. I was pleased to see so many gardening items already out on the store shelves. I was mostly interested in picking up some seed packets. What I found instead was quite a nice surprise. Bins and bins of biodegradable seed pods from Miracle-Gro. Read on to find out more about this ingenious new idea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUFL4iAyPHMYdWt2a0_KGHWyRpDlUPVCjMjapfS0sM80pJg2vYKsrpn0N4sgtNBZUtnaeZ8XDbgQBKlERU4nuQivBZgIKAkbjcNjqgk_I0L6NML_SR2tDEcmsoh_7LucAWlSX0GPlEBXsP/s1600/seed+11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUFL4iAyPHMYdWt2a0_KGHWyRpDlUPVCjMjapfS0sM80pJg2vYKsrpn0N4sgtNBZUtnaeZ8XDbgQBKlERU4nuQivBZgIKAkbjcNjqgk_I0L6NML_SR2tDEcmsoh_7LucAWlSX0GPlEBXsP/s1600/seed+11.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The minds at Miracle-Gro have come up with this handy new way of getting your seeds in the ground by way of these peat pods. They are called "Growables Seed Pods." Each pod contains the seeds in a soil mixture and Miracle-Gro fertilizer. All you do is loosen the soil in your garden, insert the pod, bring the soil up to the top of the pod, and water. I will be planting these in our Earth Boxes.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I bought several of them. Cucumber, spinach and cherry tomato.</div>

<br />
Watermelon, Sweet Pepper, Globe Tomato, and Jalapeno Pepper. I see some delicious homemade salsa in my future. They also had herb seed pods and I bought three of those to plant in pots and keep in the kitchen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6vG2tsS9i3YlI-ZNylBlPHBdVXmyMFRF1s2UlnKyoSugisz7IZ-kbkM0s4vYWvhTAh08h5_esGLpGWk02IkQFwOY2LxAcKTPGEd_9uno1DAYu07JDTLj9caFavMOWfM_M0pDIpRf6Uvca/s1600/seed+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6vG2tsS9i3YlI-ZNylBlPHBdVXmyMFRF1s2UlnKyoSugisz7IZ-kbkM0s4vYWvhTAh08h5_esGLpGWk02IkQFwOY2LxAcKTPGEd_9uno1DAYu07JDTLj9caFavMOWfM_M0pDIpRf6Uvca/s1600/seed+1.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I loved these cute clay pots with the glossy green bands of color at the top. Since I had three herb seed pods, I needed three pots. And saucers. Don't forget the saucers when planting in clay pots.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgooWIcmxQK1FpI6-VD1iL3yQYmjCxL51cOAfU9Brlz-7TATiZdwlIAkCyiP0_sa55L5k_sz2yZ6Z3uwIRod-VVP4l4VgWvirO8zRuFotQI5gisAsrfs-7ZLgs0ePtwgSbRloKxSRLlOj_d/s1600/seed+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgooWIcmxQK1FpI6-VD1iL3yQYmjCxL51cOAfU9Brlz-7TATiZdwlIAkCyiP0_sa55L5k_sz2yZ6Z3uwIRod-VVP4l4VgWvirO8zRuFotQI5gisAsrfs-7ZLgs0ePtwgSbRloKxSRLlOj_d/s1600/seed+5.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I filled each pot with Miracle-Gro potting soil. Then inserted one each of a different herb seed pod in each pot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWhd4qNEtQhjlYtITBOTgwjdDwFqxBdSF2hFPmpoG3zBUlrBJXsxCXziRPgEiZUvkpDvbvsMJ8zJh-a60dX6yOjbzqoQ92LLgcK0ODkmz00kVO7QrEVq9JxjtaYJKz9KVP-d3raJJOYOpS/s1600/seed+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWhd4qNEtQhjlYtITBOTgwjdDwFqxBdSF2hFPmpoG3zBUlrBJXsxCXziRPgEiZUvkpDvbvsMJ8zJh-a60dX6yOjbzqoQ92LLgcK0ODkmz00kVO7QrEVq9JxjtaYJKz9KVP-d3raJJOYOpS/s1600/seed+6.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, Cilantro. This will be used in the salsa recipe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdjIm4BkToJg61NZJ1bJ9B_ILedOP5A_QLZXgcnObYU0rQqHBfEJzL3iG-ghsgqt0-RDkB81EfxXMcA_HGTB51xF-UXPgY30ovtHH4vAeVACsH8q-VNsnknMjQHL4TyylzOPliuaNlVz3l/s1600/seed+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdjIm4BkToJg61NZJ1bJ9B_ILedOP5A_QLZXgcnObYU0rQqHBfEJzL3iG-ghsgqt0-RDkB81EfxXMcA_HGTB51xF-UXPgY30ovtHH4vAeVACsH8q-VNsnknMjQHL4TyylzOPliuaNlVz3l/s1600/seed+7.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, Dill. I love dill, ... on most anything. With sour cream on a baked potato. Sprinkled in a salad. Over grilled or baked salmon. I cannot wait to have my own fresh dill.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtPbpX6lkkpOPF5gZf-SOa9Epbe20OmXYLcyoYYKOlDCWSRrUxyrnN2dtpoM0bG9cOgI1nueN_4yJUajGZxt3Cmt-xCe6SGr-RgaigF-fHNRteKOUEwhmyDImTtK4-UKKnozYr3uXT5FYV/s1600/seed+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtPbpX6lkkpOPF5gZf-SOa9Epbe20OmXYLcyoYYKOlDCWSRrUxyrnN2dtpoM0bG9cOgI1nueN_4yJUajGZxt3Cmt-xCe6SGr-RgaigF-fHNRteKOUEwhmyDImTtK4-UKKnozYr3uXT5FYV/s1600/seed+8.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, Basil. Another favorite. Delicious with tomato and sliced mozzarella on a sandwich. Or used to flavor homemade tomato sauce.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS8IYQwBi160rThGrrd3ClXuml8QtGOyna-zlKUXo-FnbH__rIIENpq-Z9NLygqPIDhdqq-WAGFOf1mkAFQbRwQfjGtq9-AGKUZ03jhmFKackYgEXkt7EyimESiLOBcdiOBEwZwmrJ4Q2p/s1600/seed+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS8IYQwBi160rThGrrd3ClXuml8QtGOyna-zlKUXo-FnbH__rIIENpq-Z9NLygqPIDhdqq-WAGFOf1mkAFQbRwQfjGtq9-AGKUZ03jhmFKackYgEXkt7EyimESiLOBcdiOBEwZwmrJ4Q2p/s1600/seed+2.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are all three pots with the seed pods ready to start growing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOHPYM4oPHtIwT9gRDrsVORkv2xjukkCMoa0hKA31qRdD1madaRrQrdHIhpkaQ-RZ5KoqIPuOd4a7jAv-PFFkEAgJ6KwKKBq0ei7i_RMceViSkyAQFQKSXev8dZWzNky1uXp5DuYJNs57E/s1600/seed+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOHPYM4oPHtIwT9gRDrsVORkv2xjukkCMoa0hKA31qRdD1madaRrQrdHIhpkaQ-RZ5KoqIPuOd4a7jAv-PFFkEAgJ6KwKKBq0ei7i_RMceViSkyAQFQKSXev8dZWzNky1uXp5DuYJNs57E/s1600/seed+3.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I removed the paperwhites and the amaryllis from the window ledge in the kitchen. Their time had come and gone. They will be put away until next year. In their place I set the herb pots. They will receive lots of morning sun in this location. Two on this side.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivXGPNVEqkI5UTQGjjDdA8HNSCurrWmHicmX2HXzzhgYBkF52Q_w93jfQmUb2H4qovnnEdsbN4YhalBt7oNGlEwu5TRphLLjnprcqAaugE2A3U9EzoxFFKnItjU68603enrFyL64WUxxeg/s1600/seed+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivXGPNVEqkI5UTQGjjDdA8HNSCurrWmHicmX2HXzzhgYBkF52Q_w93jfQmUb2H4qovnnEdsbN4YhalBt7oNGlEwu5TRphLLjnprcqAaugE2A3U9EzoxFFKnItjU68603enrFyL64WUxxeg/s1600/seed+4.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And one on other other side. I cannot wait until we start to see these sprout.<br />
<br />
You will note that I did not label each pot with the specific herb planted. Since each of these herbs has a very specific leaf formation, it is not necessary for me to label them since I have worked with each herb many, many times over the years. If you are just starting to work with herbs, you could easily label each pot with a small stick pushed into the soil with the name of the herb handwritten on the stick.</div>

It's almost time for Cupid's arrow. And we are quickly putting together our embossed favor boxes for sale on <a href="http://boxshoppe.org/">BOXSHOPPE.org</a>. Take a look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMZRMt3omcRVc28Cm07d_fw8Vgiqnmzn7Cs7pr7lOK-Rhn_uBZz-y44GlOuLaNWrTS7iKZf356Be-Rf8HFldBLAGke5w3MdHNNkOAbDivs63CUrun_vrZpYejAN83JD1qjS9-uV1BC9ILq/s1600/val+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMZRMt3omcRVc28Cm07d_fw8Vgiqnmzn7Cs7pr7lOK-Rhn_uBZz-y44GlOuLaNWrTS7iKZf356Be-Rf8HFldBLAGke5w3MdHNNkOAbDivs63CUrun_vrZpYejAN83JD1qjS9-uV1BC9ILq/s1600/val+1.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We have some very cute boxes that we will be offering. These boxes are two inch square and each is hand embossed with a different Valentine's Day theme. We have "Flirt" boxes, "Kiss" boxes, "Happy Valentine's Day" boxes and "Fancy Heart" boxes. Each design comes in either pink grapefruit or brilliant red, except the Fancy Heart. That only comes in pink grapefruit. The brilliant red just did not work for that design. On the far right you will see that we have started some Easter boxes as well. We are going to experiment with adding some additional colors to these, so they will be added to the site a little later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5BTLEuB2Pmcl3eY2pa2ngVZfrnzecF6WaEuxh0sGzpkeNE_TpTLyeAzGGwYRjIMlhOyFQMI3_tjhBbWRNnAQYPQ9KbsSvv6hJ2E_TcM8yqx640lvXZPw8hSkZ_WmbkA9zsoR0dfClGnWm/s1600/val+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5BTLEuB2Pmcl3eY2pa2ngVZfrnzecF6WaEuxh0sGzpkeNE_TpTLyeAzGGwYRjIMlhOyFQMI3_tjhBbWRNnAQYPQ9KbsSvv6hJ2E_TcM8yqx640lvXZPw8hSkZ_WmbkA9zsoR0dfClGnWm/s1600/val+3.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The boxes will be sold in sets of five.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Each box comes with a hearty amount of excelsior, or crinkle-cut, to provide a cushion for whatever you desire to include in the box. A delicious truffle, or two. Some heart-shaped candies. Maybe a little round lip-gloss or two. Or, maybe a, ... ring? Or a tennis bracelet or a pendant on a chain.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-c2mgmT0RCoY34DzvJUZnuPaagoaIaGk4j6bKYjR8NREiD8NWGnpAu7q-VXS8XDayR1gLKlEYy44QVtNM2Vb5LEsuNnfoPD14rYHeBmhFZccDBx6hQuj7sazAIDvwfxnxRUkeoh6eeU2X/s1600/val+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-c2mgmT0RCoY34DzvJUZnuPaagoaIaGk4j6bKYjR8NREiD8NWGnpAu7q-VXS8XDayR1gLKlEYy44QVtNM2Vb5LEsuNnfoPD14rYHeBmhFZccDBx6hQuj7sazAIDvwfxnxRUkeoh6eeU2X/s1600/val+4.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The top box has solid colored pink paper excelsior. This box has a combination pink and ivory that is coarse, like a very thinly shaved balsa wood. Either way, the boxes are very cute and a great way to present gifts or to use as place settings if you are having a dinner. They also work on an entry table just inside the front door to be handed to guests as they leave as a parting gift. You decide how you want to use them. We are in the process of getting them photographed for the website, so check back in a few days and we'll have more news.</div>

Whose favorite blogger is now a certified Wedding Planner? Why me, of course. I finished the online course and received my certificate last week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjomDZibDc8z9oPBpthSMwsko5CmqjzJBKolugD6qCMcsJKdN5dSDoRu7ejnc45BBRHDl4iOTNaBE5JGpbX7gVU8wzGoOgjN2rwbN8pc34KEldh6pTzAo11i7MUljxE2hByiWnFmmLFu-yB/s1600/certificate.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjomDZibDc8z9oPBpthSMwsko5CmqjzJBKolugD6qCMcsJKdN5dSDoRu7ejnc45BBRHDl4iOTNaBE5JGpbX7gVU8wzGoOgjN2rwbN8pc34KEldh6pTzAo11i7MUljxE2hByiWnFmmLFu-yB/s1600/certificate.jpg" height="490" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Will I actively seek clients looking for a Wedding Planner? No. I have my hands quite full enough with <u>Welcome to Crest Avenue</u> and BOXSHOPPE. Not to mention other ventures. I took the course so that I could fully understand all the aspects of wedding planning and what a Wedding Planner does. It is quite an involved profession and not for someone who is easily rattled or who does not have good organizational skills. I expect to work with Wedding Planners in the future when I receive orders for favor boxes for the wedding reception.<br />
<br />
Next on my list of continuing education? Event Planning/101. I have already signed up for the course. I just need to get started.</div>

As we have discussed previously, "it's all in the details." Sometimes, indeed, most times how your projects turn out is based on how well you take care of the details. We are going to talk today about just such a project I had over the Christmas season and I am going to share with you how I approached the issue and solved it with a minimum of time and money.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQT5fk6-v1lCExlVFmyqy3f9auy9zFe1PUf8sPFynNHBPTialjl7aL86a6lY8-mlXXQsxweGYrX0iO6zDD_D7Qv4_v4IM8M9Ibkh4P3ug31kJ5CIdSXWe6DNvmmOYLuc25yK0Jx_M1ffMX/s1600/present+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQT5fk6-v1lCExlVFmyqy3f9auy9zFe1PUf8sPFynNHBPTialjl7aL86a6lY8-mlXXQsxweGYrX0iO6zDD_D7Qv4_v4IM8M9Ibkh4P3ug31kJ5CIdSXWe6DNvmmOYLuc25yK0Jx_M1ffMX/s1600/present+2.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
During my Christmas shopping this year, I found a gift for Bev in this <a href="http://www.ellentracy.com/" target="_blank">Ellen Tracy</a> Shimmering Eyes ensemble. The package contained a melange of dusky eye shadows, eyeliners and I believe a lip gloss or lip liner. I knew immediately I had to buy this as a Christmas gift for her.<br />

<br />
The box was in perfect order, but as you can see above, the clear, round seal which held the box top in place was dirty and worn. The gift itself was lovely. But this unattractive clear seal just wouldn't do. It detracted from the package.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFlIkeJu7PnDU5Zbt4rkYyATH8OU8e_W6z_1X5l3_qVIkjQiI3yY7yfq4mIhuIt9iQdn19qZkQNmxqFgd5fniWT5dXfc5xUidd2eK2K4Uy6U6XcfKDXDL_CLI8oKX7lmlHT2LSEvA2o-zv/s1600/present+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFlIkeJu7PnDU5Zbt4rkYyATH8OU8e_W6z_1X5l3_qVIkjQiI3yY7yfq4mIhuIt9iQdn19qZkQNmxqFgd5fniWT5dXfc5xUidd2eK2K4Uy6U6XcfKDXDL_CLI8oKX7lmlHT2LSEvA2o-zv/s1600/present+4.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After I got the box home, I set about removing the dirty and worn seal from the box top. Some of these come off with great ease. Some do not. This seal was somewhere in the middle. It took a little time and patience to remove it cleanly. But in the end, I was the victor.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5aTEr9UtLInUp_2SsUuUCBzd3NXrtWUA2bsP5if1bVr5tJHyi8hWuainmLVRUqi2PBZFg5yaf_pvgB-JmXf6jODORVYBuxu8IYuxPqZ7_YaWkLDfVAjQawn1UhWqFcgd7VaJZhNxJMqwq/s1600/present+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5aTEr9UtLInUp_2SsUuUCBzd3NXrtWUA2bsP5if1bVr5tJHyi8hWuainmLVRUqi2PBZFg5yaf_pvgB-JmXf6jODORVYBuxu8IYuxPqZ7_YaWkLDfVAjQawn1UhWqFcgd7VaJZhNxJMqwq/s1600/present+1.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I keep in stock a sheet, or several sheets of gold and silver seals which are used on greeting card envelopes. Since the trim on this box was goldtone, I decided to use a gold seal for this project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB7WL_eXcFPgt5W3aMh338EsH4zUronyI83hhjiTjJjvVi4MEksdrefoj9mC9cXFfGMClqFVfmzZRL2FmH6dgSpeq7AF6bD_FGKmNeN1ShSTFWBXGJiU5dJuwcsymISmjJiU-VH-2IfPz0/s1600/present+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB7WL_eXcFPgt5W3aMh338EsH4zUronyI83hhjiTjJjvVi4MEksdrefoj9mC9cXFfGMClqFVfmzZRL2FmH6dgSpeq7AF6bD_FGKmNeN1ShSTFWBXGJiU5dJuwcsymISmjJiU-VH-2IfPz0/s1600/present+5.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After the clear seal was removed, I simply replaced it with one of these gold seals. Such an improvement. This small upgrade gave the box a nice, clean, sophisticated look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifQcwnlooADJ2j0DP97N1Y0n2ExjXwcxCjYedjOYv74ZeF8HQrZaQcdu1O1gMiO40UwX-Fs7dHbIDlh9RyxGcyqBbslLQSrss6t6GtnPwfyx4ic6P0KlGYIvEQXRA9GdbqAaJZKos3bEbf/s1600/present+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifQcwnlooADJ2j0DP97N1Y0n2ExjXwcxCjYedjOYv74ZeF8HQrZaQcdu1O1gMiO40UwX-Fs7dHbIDlh9RyxGcyqBbslLQSrss6t6GtnPwfyx4ic6P0KlGYIvEQXRA9GdbqAaJZKos3bEbf/s1600/present+6.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It matched the gold trim perfectly. These gold and silver seals, at 1-1/4" in diameter, are larger than most of the clear seals which are used in packing these days. You could probably get away with leaving the clear seal in place and placing one of these larger seals over top. My suggestion - it is better to remove the clear seal if at all possible. Take your time and try to remove it cleanly. If it will not cooperate, then place your gold or silver seal over top.<br />
<br />
Just remember - for the perfect presentation, ... it's all in the details!!!</div>

As we continued to prepare for the evening, a few more dishes made their way to the serving counter. They are shared below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKOdDFVoKXY8_1ygQmx4m7XErRir4idcLkydDcvjB0bppNeuRVaGbTCitDwCnBn8uYFuh_7dhT1hjJN1JUU9ucCWju5dzkb38EKdQhEEmMb8PocJuI1buGGefT08bPGjtSvFxJXQNoomAp/s1600/food+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKOdDFVoKXY8_1ygQmx4m7XErRir4idcLkydDcvjB0bppNeuRVaGbTCitDwCnBn8uYFuh_7dhT1hjJN1JUU9ucCWju5dzkb38EKdQhEEmMb8PocJuI1buGGefT08bPGjtSvFxJXQNoomAp/s1600/food+8.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In this crock was a delicious spinach and artichoke dip which was served warm. Really magnificent. There was very little left over. I enjoyed the left over heated, on crackers. I need to get this recipe from Bev.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO6VCs7muXySKlnkHwmCeOKts7ZcuqppcaKAk2jJd_QEE_DJS3OLeimBvU4A97bIvEVfWdFo1VfBPSCLd5QIZaukLnK4u2gW9lqhfNDpmadGUZjPEf6fkuWInbJkNC2f3z57wlKVfSjQGJ/s1600/food+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO6VCs7muXySKlnkHwmCeOKts7ZcuqppcaKAk2jJd_QEE_DJS3OLeimBvU4A97bIvEVfWdFo1VfBPSCLd5QIZaukLnK4u2gW9lqhfNDpmadGUZjPEf6fkuWInbJkNC2f3z57wlKVfSjQGJ/s1600/food+9.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In this shot you see there is a glass pedestal of smoked turkey roll-ups with a dish of pico de gallo. Superb. These were very good. Again, I need to get this recipe.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb4fjk98yhAjq9OwjB1lZjXLUJMoW3SCs_8HSZJ5GftmdTdCk_OzEc_BTinWytLfZRuibuI__UeBkXBjk7KUhuU7Qqfy0maCfxgU0WbJaJ5TeoGH67_YKN4lST8urrbCb6KOAbbD33s7LO/s1600/food+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb4fjk98yhAjq9OwjB1lZjXLUJMoW3SCs_8HSZJ5GftmdTdCk_OzEc_BTinWytLfZRuibuI__UeBkXBjk7KUhuU7Qqfy0maCfxgU0WbJaJ5TeoGH67_YKN4lST8urrbCb6KOAbbD33s7LO/s1600/food+10.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Here, at the bottom, you see we added the crock of spinach and artichoke dip and sliced baguette which was brushed with olive oil and put under the broiler until just browned and then placed on a festive serving tray.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjll7PW6zcUv7GTRNX0IB5PBOcmJFOL698pwhNlSx1pci0LEOm2iLN0qAxJ2IYUgZ5JBAGNpI8bo9cuoDahLhMYMt3qZCnd0S5DQAL7DFpdqwoqVYgbDOVrZ-7NC7g7Nku94BgZN6UluL4E/s1600/food+11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjll7PW6zcUv7GTRNX0IB5PBOcmJFOL698pwhNlSx1pci0LEOm2iLN0qAxJ2IYUgZ5JBAGNpI8bo9cuoDahLhMYMt3qZCnd0S5DQAL7DFpdqwoqVYgbDOVrZ-7NC7g7Nku94BgZN6UluL4E/s1600/food+11.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, a boat of ham balls. These were delicious too. I could see these being served with a nice cucumber/dill sauce. We served them plain and they were delicious like that. I would make these again and serve them with the cucumber/dill sauce.<br />
<br />
A festive and wonderful evening. A great way to ring in the new year.</div>

Bev was instrumental in getting all the dishes prepared for New Year's. Not only did she prepare them, but they were her recipes. The only thing I provided was a pineapple cheese ball and a Winking Santa cake from Swiss Colony. And the booze. But more on that later. Take a look at some of what she prepared.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgZAl5hnCKgOVG_KVJczSfbjjL1iiUDWwELQdFROdfmYfIyTwFdtZ0ulsYwyWSZr7qrjKsSD-h0xR_lQuqU-jAw0_HliuyK1NEa2Hn8s4fkjYHJiQGLTG7v1w_eFw313ETvZsE8lN3FatN/s1600/food+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgZAl5hnCKgOVG_KVJczSfbjjL1iiUDWwELQdFROdfmYfIyTwFdtZ0ulsYwyWSZr7qrjKsSD-h0xR_lQuqU-jAw0_HliuyK1NEa2Hn8s4fkjYHJiQGLTG7v1w_eFw313ETvZsE8lN3FatN/s1600/food+1.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This was the serving counter at first pass. Starting center top, going clockwise, we have fried tortellini with hot mustard sauce, pineapple cheese ball with a cracker assortment, Alaskan steamed shrimp with cocktail sauce (from Bob and Bette), cheese straws with a pepper relish and Scoops chips. That is someone's cocktail in the upper left corner. Oh, wait. That was mine!!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtc-VRF8N2q6Aa7a1VvHde0PfhmAdO2UDhvlK_spgHDthKESKCOpnX-ci0WsLUf19kLvvlH90eu7_7BYNFP4yQNfSu8IoFHN8YBuIvBqHjOqOL8gkGF3btKcXk0Txr53daXz25Zxmyn0cs/s1600/food+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtc-VRF8N2q6Aa7a1VvHde0PfhmAdO2UDhvlK_spgHDthKESKCOpnX-ci0WsLUf19kLvvlH90eu7_7BYNFP4yQNfSu8IoFHN8YBuIvBqHjOqOL8gkGF3btKcXk0Txr53daXz25Zxmyn0cs/s1600/food+2.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
This Winking Santa cake was ordered from Swiss Colony. Their baked goods - in fact everything from them, is so delicious. They have been around for a long time and I do not think you can ever go wrong by ordering any of their selections. This was not only very cute, but incredibly delicious.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsgDMuhMeWNQ4ire1tq6Vr8RbBZ2iwAVnthy1sxmyCgzxlSvsk1gwxluPD3tPiW_nV9ZkMfQTehTy3w1gVnstkPp4wx03U3kjtNynquY5WCL8E0JdBcaMQqK7NCb_12KTx4a0qkKj-EQGm/s1600/food+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsgDMuhMeWNQ4ire1tq6Vr8RbBZ2iwAVnthy1sxmyCgzxlSvsk1gwxluPD3tPiW_nV9ZkMfQTehTy3w1gVnstkPp4wx03U3kjtNynquY5WCL8E0JdBcaMQqK7NCb_12KTx4a0qkKj-EQGm/s1600/food+3.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Another long shot of the serving counter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbmRYybbCEnLOm-lRrvV0h20zW4imK6DZdMODaBAceP5umHoXEK5XLN0Adymq3LWcNuKcSZpL-eE72XFO9WiUVfjvcpq29lXRzA2s-acKmcFLiY1g74RrhRA2kixXoZ5fxTM_u8YrjSb5x/s1600/food+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbmRYybbCEnLOm-lRrvV0h20zW4imK6DZdMODaBAceP5umHoXEK5XLN0Adymq3LWcNuKcSZpL-eE72XFO9WiUVfjvcpq29lXRzA2s-acKmcFLiY1g74RrhRA2kixXoZ5fxTM_u8YrjSb5x/s1600/food+4.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
And another.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuycghv0e0Gzb5easegFl3yo3lvpdgBdfKhxmHMk3UbrVi2n-x-UIiQEIl04rdKYJJF9X088TJdi4HhYYCk68DpbVQj5PQVKERCW3Nk6HuO5ThsmC94Czfna0Jrl1rMBsY47VZr4LhEVmF/s1600/food+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuycghv0e0Gzb5easegFl3yo3lvpdgBdfKhxmHMk3UbrVi2n-x-UIiQEIl04rdKYJJF9X088TJdi4HhYYCk68DpbVQj5PQVKERCW3Nk6HuO5ThsmC94Czfna0Jrl1rMBsY47VZr4LhEVmF/s1600/food+5.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
This was a corn relish dip that was very tasty in the Scoops chips. Or on anything. And everything!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCe4j1oHVI3FGd99S2E5F1-B18Ieye6s9Ug0shAcH_Xl2ZndnBoNQbOjYMSr8M_0FjPtco-GiDNHtqB5eqbz6f5hmCUHiEnKsht7c5DcGmE5BTt5FGBgqSDQseG5G3blzG01mqN9GrYTRX/s1600/food+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCe4j1oHVI3FGd99S2E5F1-B18Ieye6s9Ug0shAcH_Xl2ZndnBoNQbOjYMSr8M_0FjPtco-GiDNHtqB5eqbz6f5hmCUHiEnKsht7c5DcGmE5BTt5FGBgqSDQseG5G3blzG01mqN9GrYTRX/s1600/food+6.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The fried tortellini was delicious also. But they needed to be served with a condiment and the hot mustard fit that bill.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9vJrHfQn0bvqmaIfXX-GLUs7LRdwm2uKUFdz68lRzHSkaXmaHd472VdiFRN6eJF7hr7K8p0swiYQD-RfhYpdLimjigUP-oDsF9qtYX8dHe24qc8EYjLqrrpaEo2zIAWGyoYyqNx2hCKW5/s1600/food+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9vJrHfQn0bvqmaIfXX-GLUs7LRdwm2uKUFdz68lRzHSkaXmaHd472VdiFRN6eJF7hr7K8p0swiYQD-RfhYpdLimjigUP-oDsF9qtYX8dHe24qc8EYjLqrrpaEo2zIAWGyoYyqNx2hCKW5/s1600/food+7.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The pineapple cheese ball is always a hit and this one did not disappoint. I think of all the cheese balls I make, this is my favorite.</div>

One last post of New Year's Eve. I thought these pictures were so beautiful and even more beautiful in black and white. So I decided to go with black and white.<br />
<br />

And finally, the sparkle and bling that is the season. The new mercury glass Christmas trees a present from Bev this year. Along with the votive holders in the center.<br />
<br />
You can set your home like this too. Take the decorations you have and make groupings. Small, large, whatever works in the space. Put together an eclectic grouping of things. Even if you think they may not work together. Try it anyway. Then add to and take away as you see fit. Decorating doesn't have to be strict or stringent. In fact, it should not be. Let your creative mind take you where it will.<br />

It was so cold on New Year's Eve that we set bottles of champagne outside on the deck to keep them cool. Just before midnight I went out and opened a bottle and poured the glasses. I left them to sit on the deck railing for just a few minutes and then brought them inside and handed a champagne coup to everyone. When midnight arrived and the ball fell, we all turned up our glasses and enjoyed some super-chilled bubbly. It was delicious. Champagne must be cold, cold, cold for my palate. This was perfect.<br />

We had a wonderful evening. Bev arrived on Tuesday afternoon. She and Steven went shopping to gather all the ingredients we needed to make our festive trays of delectables. I had to work on Wednesday. So they set about putting together the trays while I was working. I arrived to a kitchen fully in command by Bev. The table was set and the dishes mostly prepared. At around 8:30, we walked down the street to visit our friend Mark. We stayed for a drink and then returned home to set out everything. Bob and Bette arrived a little while later and stayed to see the ball drop and for a short time after midnight. It was a blast. Some pictures for you to enjoy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I picked up this "party in a box" that had hats and tiaras and leis and horns. Bev put it all together in this wooden box and set it on the dining room table. It looked wonderful when you first walked in the room.<br />

Candlelight in the middle of the table and several silver and platinum tapers on the table and throughout the house. The candles were Nicole Miller and just beautiful.<br />

These two pillars are battery operated, so we were able to tuck them on top of this cabinet. I still prefer real candles, but these battery powered ones are ok in certain situations.<br />

Nut roll and a delicious egg nog flavored cake from Bob and Bette. I liked both but the egg nog cake was to die for!<br />

As we were told when we were children, if you are not good all year, Santa will leave a lump of coal in your stocking and nothing under the tree. I don't think I ever really worried about receiving a lump of coal in my stocking. I always felt that someone would have to be really, REALLY bad for such a thing to happen. And I never felt that I was really THAT bad during the year.<br />
<br />
It brought back fond memories of those times as a child when I found these candies this year while out shopping for Christmas.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLWLTYxmCIrcDC_GYo6Yl8D26VXyjorMeb4nP7JIvjhwym2sY3B6gV_je3LwMPUgecqhyptkh5mjVUbR8vC_QvwJInyRKCCiNk3dqfF3A6pSEsJyK2pLtNWSseaa_ALw62EzCVnBWaH-yN/s1600/coal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLWLTYxmCIrcDC_GYo6Yl8D26VXyjorMeb4nP7JIvjhwym2sY3B6gV_je3LwMPUgecqhyptkh5mjVUbR8vC_QvwJInyRKCCiNk3dqfF3A6pSEsJyK2pLtNWSseaa_ALw62EzCVnBWaH-yN/s1600/coal.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>These little lumps of coal are actually chocolate Krackel.</i> </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
How positively life-like are these little lumps of coal? I had to buy several bags of them. They have gotten laughs at the office. And quite a few people have asked me what they are. I was rather shocked at that. I thought everyone knew the "coal in the stocking" story. But I guess not. Actually, many of the people who have asked me what they are and the meaning of them are a good bit younger than yours truly. Obviously parents today are not telling their children they will get a lump of coal for Christmas if they are not good all year. Pity.</div>

We had our first snow of the season yesterday. And, as is frequently the case, the forecast was not quite what we were expecting. It was reported that we would receive a dusting to one inch of accumulation before the snow ended around noon on Tuesday. We had already received two inches by the time we left the house at 8:00 AM. So we knew then that this would turn into more than just a dusting to one inch of snow. What we actually got was four to six inches of snow in the city and at least six inches points west of the city. Based on the forecast of a dusting to one inch, employers and school systems opened. Some of the schools opened two hours late. The roads were an absolute mess and this lead to all kinds of automobile accidents. Some schools ended up closing for the day but others did not. Pandemonium ensued. The bottom line is, we do not do well in the snow here in the mid-Atlantic. Other areas of the country have their weaknesses. Ours is our inability to function on the roads or in any way during snow. That's just the way it is.<br />
<br />
Below are some pictures I took throughout the day. I don't particularly like going out in the snow, but it is beautiful.<br />
<br />

Here, a shot of some of the accumulation of snow at the train station last night. I don't think this is a true and accurate accounting. This looks like about and inch of snow. We got closer to four inches of snow in Cheverly and six inches in the city and points west.<br />

I loved how the light shone through the snow. The snow was beautiful but it caused headaches for those of us who were out in it. I heard stories of it taking five hours to drive from downtown DC to Alexandria, VA. For reference, that trip should take about twenty minutes without traffic and no longer than an hour in heavy rush hour traffic.<br />
<br />
And that was our snowy Tuesday.</div>

The day after Thanksgiving, <i>"Black Friday" </i>as it is commonly known, I spent, among other things, planting bulbs. In particular, Amaryllis and Paper Whites. Not being able to <i>putz</i> in the gardens or with the pots on the deck during the winter months makes me a little crazy. So planting some indoor bulbs helps to keep my hands in the dirt. I placed the pots with the bulbs in the window box in the kitchen which faces east. That gave them plenty of morning light. I watered the Paper Whites frequently. The Amaryllis required fewer waterings; just enough to keep the soil moist but not wet. Below is a pictorial of my indoor bulb garden. I hope you enjoy.<br />

This picture was taken a couple of weeks after planting. You can see that this bulb was very healthy.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The same with the other Amaryllis. This one sent up two separate flowers. In the foreground you can see the bud of the Paper White just about to open.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the midst of all this, there is this cute little cachepot with chicks and hens and some other little tropical looking plans which was presented to me by my dear friend Lea for my birthday in early November. That is getting regular drinks of water along with the other plants in this area. And looking very healthy.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In this picture, taken a few days later, you see the Paper Whites just starting to open. Lots of buds ready to open.</div>

<br />
And, some days later, a beautiful display. These were so incredible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhIml8X-i-84Zi1OXUbat84YcnN67o-cXGn0_LTboKnCusXQSlRlcA6f4C_l0jjbb03gzopwxgNOLG60kqge-2kObYEIGkvfyKnxCFQlKqQKkPuzOyu_h3Vmd80QCRJ_rtb4puhKVW4bGM/s1600/flower+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhIml8X-i-84Zi1OXUbat84YcnN67o-cXGn0_LTboKnCusXQSlRlcA6f4C_l0jjbb03gzopwxgNOLG60kqge-2kObYEIGkvfyKnxCFQlKqQKkPuzOyu_h3Vmd80QCRJ_rtb4puhKVW4bGM/s1600/flower+1.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, today, this Amaryllis has unfurled. And it is quite a looker.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNM_6UmvMw2Y219o_URv20WIEqtsJOypF0vOgVBguBRhDGIEAE-al1KXxCeGCxB_wecSZX0lBzZ5iPSxfrs7tvnhU5P52z4gZwhU8_V0oE1tk6LaQ4D9ZBqmXV-H2dhcdkgF71kBgOlG6e/s1600/flower+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNM_6UmvMw2Y219o_URv20WIEqtsJOypF0vOgVBguBRhDGIEAE-al1KXxCeGCxB_wecSZX0lBzZ5iPSxfrs7tvnhU5P52z4gZwhU8_V0oE1tk6LaQ4D9ZBqmXV-H2dhcdkgF71kBgOlG6e/s1600/flower+4.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Another shot looking into the center of one of the blooms.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA0hHq6XmprYRMJEg5guJujD4ZoGUvRMJJh7KH-QhsHgkicJ8yWIVKk_IqDBQhaF24vC9b8sR8KThxC2gF92Vrjh_qRN93SmS2ELpbw9Xg0qIg6XqRRdZD8Jh7gJP-nLsFR63b7PeaU76R/s1600/flower+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA0hHq6XmprYRMJEg5guJujD4ZoGUvRMJJh7KH-QhsHgkicJ8yWIVKk_IqDBQhaF24vC9b8sR8KThxC2gF92Vrjh_qRN93SmS2ELpbw9Xg0qIg6XqRRdZD8Jh7gJP-nLsFR63b7PeaU76R/s1600/flower+2.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And on the other side of the window shelf, we have these wonderful Amaryllis just starting to bloom. These are just beautiful. We missed having them in bloom for Christmas by a week and a half. Lesson learned. Next year we will plant just prior to Thanksgiving rather than the day after. That will mean gorgeous blooms for Christmas day and even through the new year. I think I'll put these bulbs in brown paper bags after they are done blooming and place them in a cold, dark place for use again next year.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
These wreaths came from IKEA. I thought they were beautiful here on the kitchen windows.<br />
<br />

Another shots with the morning sun shining through.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Another in the tree collection, this black and white pyramidial candle looked stunning on the mantel alongside the sparkling globe.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoAaYbQQYZltMhTqgZkMNb-ff08QHu7q79ODCnNXq-rbb48h_ttwhqS5eh3lEJb8830QJdrOfb6ERDlIQ0hsNBzalCLslnun7G0FBCheusmRIhpSMNA-f1o1UhVDfW_6_1AEXJ6V52v7Ru/s1600/wreath+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoAaYbQQYZltMhTqgZkMNb-ff08QHu7q79ODCnNXq-rbb48h_ttwhqS5eh3lEJb8830QJdrOfb6ERDlIQ0hsNBzalCLslnun7G0FBCheusmRIhpSMNA-f1o1UhVDfW_6_1AEXJ6V52v7Ru/s1600/wreath+4.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Very simple - three ornaments in a glass jar. Couldn't be simpler to do and very pretty.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ_53sx4EVB_zgSEqg5pa_wmXLC2QLw6Cn1Um1wE0J_LWahxlw2FvLJeUQlapq_2zF8ClJW-5auD28bTSHm-aIG5CoD8EnEhwibpC_vMuvIuziOdz6WkHFrPfOMpnyklH_7vJhnRoPomsd/s1600/wreath+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ_53sx4EVB_zgSEqg5pa_wmXLC2QLw6Cn1Um1wE0J_LWahxlw2FvLJeUQlapq_2zF8ClJW-5auD28bTSHm-aIG5CoD8EnEhwibpC_vMuvIuziOdz6WkHFrPfOMpnyklH_7vJhnRoPomsd/s1600/wreath+5.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
This was probably my least favorite of all the pictures. This ornament tree just looks lost and uninspired. I left it on this shelf and added another, smaller ornament tree in stainless steel. Even with that, I was less than pleased.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzpwd6px29gXs8YCbgZxqMuSLBGsuyR00M80q4sYo8FFEKg0K_1uGMTUAbG-XX_lSPygjwtUvZLSTSYFe-8yOiBQZxLRC_jkVYn39Cjc65eIyOl4sf3-UCHcIP6X6xboFJMtHc_qGOTOlQ/s1600/wreath+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzpwd6px29gXs8YCbgZxqMuSLBGsuyR00M80q4sYo8FFEKg0K_1uGMTUAbG-XX_lSPygjwtUvZLSTSYFe-8yOiBQZxLRC_jkVYn39Cjc65eIyOl4sf3-UCHcIP6X6xboFJMtHc_qGOTOlQ/s1600/wreath+6.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The Christmas cactus was beautiful this year. Tons of beautiful pink blooms. Stunning.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKgOzfR39TqZ8Sf27sTcvARW3A2PSlND2qW_c2z7gjiJD1Hi2BltNH69rvi5i2ca-wjwRCAZdWK9Z6nBV0QqE9VOGj03VXEB3f53qbxPljG754K3Ky0npG7QwqCnJBTxPlhFhyShM4OeqW/s1600/wreath+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKgOzfR39TqZ8Sf27sTcvARW3A2PSlND2qW_c2z7gjiJD1Hi2BltNH69rvi5i2ca-wjwRCAZdWK9Z6nBV0QqE9VOGj03VXEB3f53qbxPljG754K3Ky0npG7QwqCnJBTxPlhFhyShM4OeqW/s1600/wreath+7.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, the paperwhites. They need to be watered regularly and in short order you will have the most beautiful blooms.</div>

We take an extraordinary number of pictures for Welcome to Crest Avenue. I usually write the story in my head as I am taking the pictures. Some of the stories make it on the blog, some do not. Some of the pictures make it, some do not. I am constantly going through pictures and archiving those which I feel are important and deleting those which are not. We ended up with several pictures taken during our time spent decorating for Christmas. Most of these pictures were very good, they just did not form into a story. I thought I would share them with you today.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXvYdteJM7YNIUhT4Spa44OSkp0SOxwvUrmD3jp4UuNee99QFDgyS_d09Bknx-yP1ZBIDJgb-D9NJ0_4gK9BXZnuomewsXw7iuL2Xueh2kxwymROTQEpIzHg587SQHPgxNLEvwRswh_GH6/s1600/decoration+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXvYdteJM7YNIUhT4Spa44OSkp0SOxwvUrmD3jp4UuNee99QFDgyS_d09Bknx-yP1ZBIDJgb-D9NJ0_4gK9BXZnuomewsXw7iuL2Xueh2kxwymROTQEpIzHg587SQHPgxNLEvwRswh_GH6/s1600/decoration+2.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
This picture actually got posted on Facebook. We referred to it as a "Magic Bullet Cozy." We got several responses. A cute idea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTrd06O5WfbtND8Pz8A73klKClnnKiPY6Xqg8z-VGzds6tuC5SbuUeGakMA4kf9lfyZLsTMNXbaTr38M1w4H0bmbrqFmFTsn3Mqd7v-JvksEuug4vx8VhDP9nQ8Xhp55Didj0FFBOG_z9Q/s1600/decoration+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTrd06O5WfbtND8Pz8A73klKClnnKiPY6Xqg8z-VGzds6tuC5SbuUeGakMA4kf9lfyZLsTMNXbaTr38M1w4H0bmbrqFmFTsn3Mqd7v-JvksEuug4vx8VhDP9nQ8Xhp55Didj0FFBOG_z9Q/s1600/decoration+3.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This shot is of one of several sizes of similar gift bags which came in a grouping which we found at CVS. These were really cute. I think we used all of them. There was one large, two medium and four small bags.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmxf0NklaILxn_6mnrRxNo-ciuJ0FJvC8bssVQ1FuHETf5ahjZJhC4N22-Q49TrkJGvxBDHHqrLHePknSZvlVDGp9RkjM1KPt_hiLhVxZqY3JaRts8uFzSRf8omOo1b5dnSDeFK5Pfm0KO/s1600/decoration+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmxf0NklaILxn_6mnrRxNo-ciuJ0FJvC8bssVQ1FuHETf5ahjZJhC4N22-Q49TrkJGvxBDHHqrLHePknSZvlVDGp9RkjM1KPt_hiLhVxZqY3JaRts8uFzSRf8omOo1b5dnSDeFK5Pfm0KO/s1600/decoration+1.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
This was our tree. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVCOYTc1NQYNRVoRyyliImgTiW-Fdz7Tv0r4wBfb9yFD1X4qobFbP_tJaLN9cjQw7jWOkCORx8NYJpdIC1Jc2UtwBhGVzE_Kgu64Jwb8Q5EBG07vVfw1dnOxKFwqPAsbYmDDU9k8kqOqRw/s1600/decoration+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVCOYTc1NQYNRVoRyyliImgTiW-Fdz7Tv0r4wBfb9yFD1X4qobFbP_tJaLN9cjQw7jWOkCORx8NYJpdIC1Jc2UtwBhGVzE_Kgu64Jwb8Q5EBG07vVfw1dnOxKFwqPAsbYmDDU9k8kqOqRw/s1600/decoration+9.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I loved this pretty gold star on top. The fact that is lights up adds even more warmth to the tree. You will notice the ornament hooks in a fanciful curl. So much nicer than the standard hooks. Details. You achieve perfection in the details.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgrOAfy_7ZWDP36sqnyJPw35isqiK7auH5tF56lQCLNH0btL_zP6tlHquTvpR-ShyZLE9DDNEH2nqfSnRlxsRGMdGxpzLxctPmRhs7OtQ7PUf299mZC1yQxBfboScsiiMaEu9XJRdMl6yY/s1600/decoration+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgrOAfy_7ZWDP36sqnyJPw35isqiK7auH5tF56lQCLNH0btL_zP6tlHquTvpR-ShyZLE9DDNEH2nqfSnRlxsRGMdGxpzLxctPmRhs7OtQ7PUf299mZC1yQxBfboScsiiMaEu9XJRdMl6yY/s1600/decoration+8.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Again here with the details. The stockings match the tree skirt. I loved the blackwatch plaid with the faux fur. No real fur in this household. We are adamantly opposed to ANY animal being raised solely for the purpose of being killed for their hide. I cannot think of anything more gruesome.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSyMrKz4JXXABg_z9G1N1UNmL6xZLMinuYhxbyjegfWp34Ua-b9o03vy6aCdBgWf4iZCeIR3rRDzMvZrwoo61_kUCFnxOvbiRD6u_j-DXV63dVQelYTE1vzy0Ewc4GV82C6arZII7shP3F/s1600/decoration+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSyMrKz4JXXABg_z9G1N1UNmL6xZLMinuYhxbyjegfWp34Ua-b9o03vy6aCdBgWf4iZCeIR3rRDzMvZrwoo61_kUCFnxOvbiRD6u_j-DXV63dVQelYTE1vzy0Ewc4GV82C6arZII7shP3F/s1600/decoration+4.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A shot of the banister before Christmas decoration.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTsQYG5LKkt-lRS0qfByEi9mPcI7lJNccWpGFn5fQSK1JWOwqI0oUxeRyrg1RD6R07bwwB2PD_nwoo3PYjXRmOCQNEo9Fk9dbpK-79zhZPjI1c-emA9QOF0lnjXIStNJOsYGC5KwCYdGKc/s1600/decoration+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTsQYG5LKkt-lRS0qfByEi9mPcI7lJNccWpGFn5fQSK1JWOwqI0oUxeRyrg1RD6R07bwwB2PD_nwoo3PYjXRmOCQNEo9Fk9dbpK-79zhZPjI1c-emA9QOF0lnjXIStNJOsYGC5KwCYdGKc/s1600/decoration+5.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And a shot of the banister after Christmas decoration.<br />
<br />
So, there you have a few pictures of how our house looked for the Christmas season. I'll share a few more of these with you on tomorrow's post.<br />

We couldn't very well have Christmas without getting something for little Baxter. Since he already has more toys and sweaters and jackets and boots and dog gear than any other miniature wire-haired dachshund in the world, we opted for the gourmet cookie assortment for this years gift.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I found these at Petco just days before Christmas and I thought they would be perfect as his Christmas gift. I will tell you that they were a big hit. I do not know for certain, but I would venture that Petco has probably marked these down considerably on their after Christmas sale. I'm sure your pooch would love them too!</div>

It is almost here!! It is hard to believe that Christmas 2014 is done and New Year's Eve is two days away. But those are the facts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZm0p8OGDxjxyfpjjHUKC8Ady-D_ILKE07fqVixwVZhUsEyv6Rqcb_Rue3D3_Rs3S2UguMneDyxqLZeX6TVD91k2lJrO1C63_k_XIzsvSyGWhVytFt5Wfhwn2Bc0OpD8d0MDh55Z1Zwztp/s1600/bottle+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZm0p8OGDxjxyfpjjHUKC8Ady-D_ILKE07fqVixwVZhUsEyv6Rqcb_Rue3D3_Rs3S2UguMneDyxqLZeX6TVD91k2lJrO1C63_k_XIzsvSyGWhVytFt5Wfhwn2Bc0OpD8d0MDh55Z1Zwztp/s1600/bottle+1.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We will have a small gathering on Wednesday evening which will be fun, fun, fun. We picked up several of these mini bottles of club soda and diet tonic water for the evening. There is more to come on our line-up.</div>

You may have seen the advertisements on tv for the Aqua Stone. I was intrigued, so I thought it time to give this a try. The concept could not be more simplistic. Place a porous orb in a bowl of water and humidify the air. That is pretty much how it works. Check it out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTsljYM1xZiVzWukX48RdDucgKa-YgnTbH7SlBAa8vd7WMqaEN7zCneNHYltLyLACpFtAGapPGoh1dbuNiT2YWfZfQLOhEN56J-I7YR1vlWFKdAs6Ukh_qpi3_8vd0jNp7rOX0WJfuD8Yu/s1600/aqua+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTsljYM1xZiVzWukX48RdDucgKa-YgnTbH7SlBAa8vd7WMqaEN7zCneNHYltLyLACpFtAGapPGoh1dbuNiT2YWfZfQLOhEN56J-I7YR1vlWFKdAs6Ukh_qpi3_8vd0jNp7rOX0WJfuD8Yu/s1600/aqua+1.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The "Elegant" Natural Room Humidifier. I would have bought it just for that statement. But there were other reasons why I wanted to give this a try.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-DWDRdyvLGGincQidNP7WPV-8Rhrz0KujS8L6ixxWHhWw8Z2jGpb6-WendyGsDafq3V3la08PnL2vFYn5Ix9vCAmK2vvimUb65R0jsEd_KBrYt0Fos4fbccZZlTtBCfbKQ0d3R8EgoMzA/s1600/aqua+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-DWDRdyvLGGincQidNP7WPV-8Rhrz0KujS8L6ixxWHhWw8Z2jGpb6-WendyGsDafq3V3la08PnL2vFYn5Ix9vCAmK2vvimUb65R0jsEd_KBrYt0Fos4fbccZZlTtBCfbKQ0d3R8EgoMzA/s1600/aqua+2.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Adding moisture to the air in the winter months is good for many things, not the least of which is the ability to cut down on static electricity. Ouch!!!<br />

<br />
Here is the base - a porcelain bowl in which you add water.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio4vi2rqUyzkSnw9S1Hrs90cE_jvbu1nsySg_I4YW5HpXgydq0JJhEt6nDbVyckqplW52OcLidGWpogERW8oiBTGbwdAfkIFcDuNSfWEMfbluGkF1TtZYII5ezu8qXB15uWjExUV-kimOb/s1600/aqua+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio4vi2rqUyzkSnw9S1Hrs90cE_jvbu1nsySg_I4YW5HpXgydq0JJhEt6nDbVyckqplW52OcLidGWpogERW8oiBTGbwdAfkIFcDuNSfWEMfbluGkF1TtZYII5ezu8qXB15uWjExUV-kimOb/s1600/aqua+5.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And the porous orb which sits in the porcelain base.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOMmEZmAACHds0gsl4ivF93MpBEiqUpZ2o9ZLnwwZrc-mavejwKLYGHrypnrvV8_64RrNSWVPzhDUpxeuY8ouaPKzRjK4A9khXwItAeSXKuN2jix_SnM4D_hC53EnN0YHZbU4-4Rqk_MHm/s1600/aqua+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOMmEZmAACHds0gsl4ivF93MpBEiqUpZ2o9ZLnwwZrc-mavejwKLYGHrypnrvV8_64RrNSWVPzhDUpxeuY8ouaPKzRjK4A9khXwItAeSXKuN2jix_SnM4D_hC53EnN0YHZbU4-4Rqk_MHm/s1600/aqua+1.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here you see the underside of the orb. Really an ingenious design.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-F6a5fJVvBrPCnq-xItL8G7d2-mIbdGXy6ODTQdS73j-Qp9nvrf2AHftBT-S8gccqcvpK7iss0ZSSr-HGWZFKNwatI2eoQbbrD-ttyQ7gy3XzQbRiYwkpwyksxMo4blmF27p7q-4qkNuL/s1600/aqua+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-F6a5fJVvBrPCnq-xItL8G7d2-mIbdGXy6ODTQdS73j-Qp9nvrf2AHftBT-S8gccqcvpK7iss0ZSSr-HGWZFKNwatI2eoQbbrD-ttyQ7gy3XzQbRiYwkpwyksxMo4blmF27p7q-4qkNuL/s1600/aqua+6.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The whole thing is kind of idiot proof. There are no complicated instructions. No fill line. Just fill the bowl with water, but not too much so that it pours over the sides when you place the orb inside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiysPpDWPmXg7Ac1GcSlqQlzkoBqGDDBk5-Yt7GNGbjKxGP8MOkQ7-sbUdTH9nWex-73kx2qoOMjCP9OIIWGj8Hc6Ff1Ta0THjxu5WEX0uOzQpypGT_QY0wH4c0bQkrBD5hfMbHycOKwFTx/s1600/aqua+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiysPpDWPmXg7Ac1GcSlqQlzkoBqGDDBk5-Yt7GNGbjKxGP8MOkQ7-sbUdTH9nWex-73kx2qoOMjCP9OIIWGj8Hc6Ff1Ta0THjxu5WEX0uOzQpypGT_QY0wH4c0bQkrBD5hfMbHycOKwFTx/s1600/aqua+7.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In with the orb and you are good to go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I took this picture after it had been sitting in water for awhile. I wanted to see if the picture would show the change in color after the water was fully absorbed, but it does not. It is wet to the touch. Or maybe not wet, but fully saturated.<br />
<br />
Does the Aqua Stone work. I believe it does. It takes no electricity. You do not have to worry about bacteria or fungi growing inside the tank like you would with a standard humidifier. And it can be placed easily throughout the house.</div>

I make contributions in the form of food and other necessities to our local animal shelter from time to time throughout the year. This past weekend I made just such a trip to the DC Animal Shelter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9zb5BVZd8wDoj7Dss66QXl3QB0A3Me-eKC8Ux2ERgytb2xwMzXo0OE8nPkuqOVNuptcvZ_Nd1eRvkbrRhTZnM_8MMBS6OtqrX3w3tLtEevOY8EQhboMly7r-seLBSDtZuH7o_2FeCawDs/s1600/shelter+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9zb5BVZd8wDoj7Dss66QXl3QB0A3Me-eKC8Ux2ERgytb2xwMzXo0OE8nPkuqOVNuptcvZ_Nd1eRvkbrRhTZnM_8MMBS6OtqrX3w3tLtEevOY8EQhboMly7r-seLBSDtZuH7o_2FeCawDs/s1600/shelter+1.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Unfortunately, they do not just receive unwanted and homeless dogs, but they receive cats as well. So the first thing we picked up was this 36 can medley of 9 Lives Meaty Classics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfecOK6F1GbBz5k6dXa1fYdc3CQpKUF_YvwqdGm6xpDw8lLyE-VvvnFH6X0APvqd0cnht8an0CuWI4sa8tYrl_knFLRA1UKUD0R20Irpl5ozE_8usj2PmuJp4_sdnNVuEPEjo_2EC7MDnR/s1600/shelter+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfecOK6F1GbBz5k6dXa1fYdc3CQpKUF_YvwqdGm6xpDw8lLyE-VvvnFH6X0APvqd0cnht8an0CuWI4sa8tYrl_knFLRA1UKUD0R20Irpl5ozE_8usj2PmuJp4_sdnNVuEPEjo_2EC7MDnR/s1600/shelter+2.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
I spoke to Beau at the shelter before I started my shopping and he informed me that the shelter has a strict rule that the dogs only be fed Hill's Science Diet food. A heads-up on this food - you cannot find it at Walmart or Target or any of the big chain grocery stores. You must go to a pet store. I know this because I tried all of the above before finally going to Petco.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD5azVVui9mWQ3Yjf3LShJdSXoIO9vhHrHeNHZspx2Q_0HXKaeCgmqLsnKLSKK0-JJqg5_qRsRW706qfPksWdl7XErubWxadPZnSc7_Q1KUpjuLpyeZUMCFPHezZQH1ES4N5Mx5LmtsliX/s1600/shelter+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD5azVVui9mWQ3Yjf3LShJdSXoIO9vhHrHeNHZspx2Q_0HXKaeCgmqLsnKLSKK0-JJqg5_qRsRW706qfPksWdl7XErubWxadPZnSc7_Q1KUpjuLpyeZUMCFPHezZQH1ES4N5Mx5LmtsliX/s1600/shelter+3.jpg" height="640" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
I bought the biggest bag in stock at Petco, which was this 33 lb. bag. There are many hungry mouths to be fed at the shelter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQcsI41j1CmnkcQQeL3rvcc5fmYi65lnOt5tv6IGNrGvQHg7DrZQbFQXh__8Li5vouJNiSHx8CLLXj8-RS6hGZHnnWcfO_4cVRxF1v0LRqLfPCOoMBn80LOShrfFC0NvOLicB8Mou92VWm/s1600/shelter+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQcsI41j1CmnkcQQeL3rvcc5fmYi65lnOt5tv6IGNrGvQHg7DrZQbFQXh__8Li5vouJNiSHx8CLLXj8-RS6hGZHnnWcfO_4cVRxF1v0LRqLfPCOoMBn80LOShrfFC0NvOLicB8Mou92VWm/s1600/shelter+4.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The next item that all shelters can use is bath towels. Now, they do not need to be PortHault (<a href="http://dporthaultparis.com/towels/">http://dporthaultparis.com/towels/</a>). But simple middle of the road towels that will stand up to everyday use. These bath towels from Walmart were just perfect. And in black. Stains are camouflaged on black.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzlYq0CZ24nzhUgVPl5WVhTiIwwwoA0_qgFBdfCe86ln0SVNsgdccLtqoCPD0sgDxcdvm-Iu8OHPYYOxrN3sPZqm191oAeda_n0PsRTgpQGuvOc84t1g5UvVBEU7oMkHQoWMh8NPMKJBBI/s1600/shelter+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzlYq0CZ24nzhUgVPl5WVhTiIwwwoA0_qgFBdfCe86ln0SVNsgdccLtqoCPD0sgDxcdvm-Iu8OHPYYOxrN3sPZqm191oAeda_n0PsRTgpQGuvOc84t1g5UvVBEU7oMkHQoWMh8NPMKJBBI/s1600/shelter+5.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up, some play toys. Actually, a friend ordered these large balls from <a href="http://www.chewy.com/">www.chewy.com</a> and discovered when they arrived that she ordered the wrong size for her dogs. When we contacted Chewy and explained the situation and told them we wanted to return these and reorder the same thing in small, they were so kind and suggested we take these to our local animal shelter and they shipped out the new balls for my friend in the small size. THAT, my friends, is how you do business!! We love Chewy and we want everyone to know what a wonderful thing they did. Please use the link above to go to their website.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL55VoP0HKHqnfyF_M7DK6owRe0M3bzth17C7Z0dVk4jhkfXntcUjRF1M-mxkwM1YKNbANWeZC3cx7QAiZcclH1ai8x6QpOLvDU7ZsEgva3L0H8xSAoxE8gGNfOvxJqf2DEP-tooxn2ILB/s1600/shelter+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL55VoP0HKHqnfyF_M7DK6owRe0M3bzth17C7Z0dVk4jhkfXntcUjRF1M-mxkwM1YKNbANWeZC3cx7QAiZcclH1ai8x6QpOLvDU7ZsEgva3L0H8xSAoxE8gGNfOvxJqf2DEP-tooxn2ILB/s1600/shelter+6.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally, the car loaded, off we went to the shelter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDA2OE7vZQaIxsnHBCP91_10k8b6mLtMAslc791pExIdVp47Cs0lIPJTizLUkZS36ovGdKZIgkbQkPHJtgQcQQcbER3oQsW4NaySpnnrpKpJ7Sg3sgrMSb0XIJCRjjK9zZ30r_FEcSTgL8/s1600/shelter+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDA2OE7vZQaIxsnHBCP91_10k8b6mLtMAslc791pExIdVp47Cs0lIPJTizLUkZS36ovGdKZIgkbQkPHJtgQcQQcbER3oQsW4NaySpnnrpKpJ7Sg3sgrMSb0XIJCRjjK9zZ30r_FEcSTgL8/s1600/shelter+7.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I was hoping that I was not going to open the door to the sound of wailing pets who had been abandoned. And I did not. The operation seems to be very well run. Lots of young people with caring eyes who were very appreciative of everything I dropped off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfNsX3A_qDIIw5jh3zxRir0gvQ8kd0snkoHEtKeQnQvCgM93xl5krkeeZmLaKZm725NdEaNmNubqP_A2Y6oiDCHX7u1u8sxziX4nQ59gu5hfayP5hFCbs9xaK9NiIlynbrtjpCtxSJyn55/s1600/shelter+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfNsX3A_qDIIw5jh3zxRir0gvQ8kd0snkoHEtKeQnQvCgM93xl5krkeeZmLaKZm725NdEaNmNubqP_A2Y6oiDCHX7u1u8sxziX4nQ59gu5hfayP5hFCbs9xaK9NiIlynbrtjpCtxSJyn55/s1600/shelter+8.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I love that they have painted in HUGE letters on the front of the building facing heavily trafficked New York Avenue, "Adopt here!" A little further down "dc loves dc animals." <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkGo-aYF-JMa1PJKD4j6RfU-8dlf3-7b0JXKd4IE3QsHtUGyK3Wio2VERsi9YZnBYoKYOwLzIOJ35dtdHojg862ltmikhmL-An5nRne7d1IxOXKZwGKO0G7AYPmG7rWmNOUVdSYk5wum1m/s1600/shelter+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkGo-aYF-JMa1PJKD4j6RfU-8dlf3-7b0JXKd4IE3QsHtUGyK3Wio2VERsi9YZnBYoKYOwLzIOJ35dtdHojg862ltmikhmL-An5nRne7d1IxOXKZwGKO0G7AYPmG7rWmNOUVdSYk5wum1m/s1600/shelter+9.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
And on the opposite side of the building is this sign, facing traffic traveling east on New York Avenue, with their hours.<br />
<br />
If you find yourself in a situation where you can help out at your local animal shelter, please consider doing so. They would be happy if you walked in with a $5 donation or a can of food. Anything, no matter how small, is appreciated. Our furry friends look to us to care for them.</div>

I made these boxes for my colleagues. They turned out so nice I wanted to share the project with you.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHzcRGJCJQsHDvXmbZUL_Hgattfrr3BP7UXuIo7gOalcIC6qNtdXx6sACy8Bvz3Bu2tz6NXrrZ_LPku67ipyXOKyqO0q7loyY5K-GF8If7JNmGzR0GLde36v9Q86-pPj_93UIzFUrK6rQt/s1600/choc+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHzcRGJCJQsHDvXmbZUL_Hgattfrr3BP7UXuIo7gOalcIC6qNtdXx6sACy8Bvz3Bu2tz6NXrrZ_LPku67ipyXOKyqO0q7loyY5K-GF8If7JNmGzR0GLde36v9Q86-pPj_93UIzFUrK6rQt/s1600/choc+1.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We began with a large container of Ferrero Rocher and some gold mirror gloss boxes. The boxes were our standard two inch by two inch by two inch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNh9iNzAD2E1Oc6RYQQ4-dJzdxT8ahOuvmZ_IBaneRxM6dJ2UyLaBFg15Z9nciQI1EWh35X7nUYymtXq3I0YFxUy1xa-CBQs1D57FnDTRKF3zAXseUv01XBCR7NmMAXK-hU6afPsWfhIpR/s1600/choc+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNh9iNzAD2E1Oc6RYQQ4-dJzdxT8ahOuvmZ_IBaneRxM6dJ2UyLaBFg15Z9nciQI1EWh35X7nUYymtXq3I0YFxUy1xa-CBQs1D57FnDTRKF3zAXseUv01XBCR7NmMAXK-hU6afPsWfhIpR/s1600/choc+4.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Before we got started with the embossing and assembling of the boxes, I made the inserts which would be placed inside each box. I tried several different ideas. But in the end, I went with this simple and elegant version. No clip art. No fanciful borders. Simple and succinct.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN8PuA5gV2c1wz-pOrCCtzi0J30KpHFcoH_yhDF_3G9KkDGE6F015gk9zWAitG14MmqTIx8qtu2h1HDj7dYBCTWVz5pcGVtbW-xGHTro-DaZ36moQ8MxgDSwRGQijWM66xH6zOm0aP7p4j/s1600/choc+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN8PuA5gV2c1wz-pOrCCtzi0J30KpHFcoH_yhDF_3G9KkDGE6F015gk9zWAitG14MmqTIx8qtu2h1HDj7dYBCTWVz5pcGVtbW-xGHTro-DaZ36moQ8MxgDSwRGQijWM66xH6zOm0aP7p4j/s1600/choc+3.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The first thing to do was to decide which stamp to use and which color of embossing powder to use. We tried several different colors but in the end we used this snow white powder. It is just a little translucent which adds a shimmer.<br />

Then we placed a single Ferrero Rocher in each box atop crinkle cut in off white and sparkling gold. The gold crinkle cut matched nicely to the gold wrap on the candy.<br />

What a cute bag, This came in an assortment of bags I bought at CVS early in the season. The bags are very sturdy and perfect for this time of year.</div>

Boxed matches are not something you see everywhere these days. When I was growing up, most every household had boxes of matches stashed away in a drawer. I still keep them.<br />
<br />
A box of matches sitting amongst your Christmas decoration on the mantel is not very pretty. But dressed up in their own bit of finery is OK.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi17zAdzN44nqzdeJ9pc0w1mcNsGbQcxk3izXesHtQtHOOwSTt-xx4rsf-DXxpFwwMZYW3XPuYXoJPmwuIb5OOuKXA8Lq3Shx5bBM_FsFaWwy-HmNLiU7DZ6tXhCkS8xwYS5-h7w_c-X93T/s1600/match+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi17zAdzN44nqzdeJ9pc0w1mcNsGbQcxk3izXesHtQtHOOwSTt-xx4rsf-DXxpFwwMZYW3XPuYXoJPmwuIb5OOuKXA8Lq3Shx5bBM_FsFaWwy-HmNLiU7DZ6tXhCkS8xwYS5-h7w_c-X93T/s1600/match+4.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A box of "diamond" brand matches with the strike plate on the side of the box. Not a very pretty sight for your mantel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik363S9sN5fiST8ipo3VtZlaP4buHoVsD-X2UvDIFCynIcezqTcBJjI7bAmrvqMVV-RNHNakIZq1ci3X-k1rpsDN9huLf9oF50AIqtQdOybRRVpIw7Um7iohuESm2CG5021h1U0pRSu5m0/s1600/match+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik363S9sN5fiST8ipo3VtZlaP4buHoVsD-X2UvDIFCynIcezqTcBJjI7bAmrvqMVV-RNHNakIZq1ci3X-k1rpsDN9huLf9oF50AIqtQdOybRRVpIw7Um7iohuESm2CG5021h1U0pRSu5m0/s1600/match+1.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>

But tucked away inside a cute little silver matte cover is perfectly acceptable.<br />

<br />
The company who made this matchbox cover was clever enough to build in an opening for the strike plate so you do not have to remove the box of matches each time you want to light one. I have no problem with this little box sitting on the mantel or anywhere in the house during the season. Little touches like this make all the difference in how you present your home to friends and family during the holiday season. And these will not cost you an arm and a leg. You can find matchbox labels on Etsy starting as low as $3.50.</div>

For the centerpiece on the dining room table this year, I decided to go simple and elegant.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4h-ebwib3XgTTpvwAjyKPgzUlo9LEvTotKyFMaDVrkv9RjrDfVUYrMOnISHFtApyJ4iZ2VYNcZloFAF4eLxXzomU6AqG4VuTAERUkegh9PU5S9Kk3DkOIiJ_DmMuLTU9rCeqctlnQ5mQu/s1600/dining+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4h-ebwib3XgTTpvwAjyKPgzUlo9LEvTotKyFMaDVrkv9RjrDfVUYrMOnISHFtApyJ4iZ2VYNcZloFAF4eLxXzomU6AqG4VuTAERUkegh9PU5S9Kk3DkOIiJ_DmMuLTU9rCeqctlnQ5mQu/s1600/dining+1.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
There is not a lot of fuss here. This is a large candle-holder base with a glass hurricane in which we placed a white pillar candle. The spruce wreath around the base is actually two faux wreaths I picked up at IKEA. If one wreath looks good, two wreaths look better. We stacked them and it really is beautiful. Faux greenery is so well made these days you can hardly tell the difference from the real stuff. Of course, the only thing lacking here is the aroma from the real thing. So I found something to fix that problem.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidFVw98XPNB0B8lGmJqK824rQYAoVOGVObtbhVNX2A6NhsuQo8lE0kC4tFTDQ4bUVoTIrVz6dXDq4EVB4Ne5u47yzqFrZMYScxCKgSxCBMXcfG1munHetS_5WO-YMo6bX6vXE_ND2Oc6kB/s1600/dining+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidFVw98XPNB0B8lGmJqK824rQYAoVOGVObtbhVNX2A6NhsuQo8lE0kC4tFTDQ4bUVoTIrVz6dXDq4EVB4Ne5u47yzqFrZMYScxCKgSxCBMXcfG1munHetS_5WO-YMo6bX6vXE_ND2Oc6kB/s1600/dining+2.jpg" height="408" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Scentsicles. I bought one container of each scent. So far, we have only used the "Wreath" scent and it is divine. Now, I know all of this is terribly artificial and not in keeping with how we usually do things at WTCA. But, these artificial wreaths were so realistically done that I just couldn't see the need to purchase real wreaths which would eventually start dropping needles and make a mess. They would have needed to be taken off the table and misted several times per week which is time consuming and messy. I just did not want to go through all of that. I've done it in the past and I do not want to again. To fill the room with the aroma of your choice, you simply remove one of the Scentsicles and hide it in amongst the greenery. The sticks are green so they blend in perfectly. When Christmas is done, we will simply box up the wreaths and place the unused Scentsicles in the box along with the wreaths for use next year. I got the Scentsicles from Michael's. </div>
